The Ghost Train, directed by Stash Kirkbride and designed by Virginia Bain at the Maddermarket Theatre, March 2015
I was heavily involved in this production from the beginning, assisting the director in the auditions
process and throughout the rehearsal and performance period as an Assistant Stage Manager. It was
a really exciting and interesting show to work on, as the director wanted to produce the sound of the
train live, multiple times every performance. This was eventually achieved with five people, including
myself, and devices as varied as a bass guitar, a lawn roller, and a bowling ball.
I was also given the opportunity to join the set designer at production meetings and have input on
the finalised design, and then went on to paint the set. In doing so, I was able to use many different
techniques and effects, including sign writing, ageing, and wood graining.
